Creating an email marketing strategy starts with understanding the 4 different stages of email marketing strategy:

And like me and many others, you’ll have many questions, doubts, and things that you aren’t quite sure how to do or whether they’ll work.

What matters is to start building your email list early and take imperfect action.

Some things won’t work. Some others will work much better than you expected. By doing, you’ll learn.

So step 1 is to debunk any of your fears and doubts and decide to build your email marketing strategy... even if you haven’t got a website or you haven’t got a product to sell! That might surprise you, but building your email list is more crucial than your website or product creation. Fact!

  • List the end goal of your online biz (1-2 things). Your dream.

Once you have embraced action, it’s time to set the goals of your email marketing strategy.

Let’s keep it simple, typically your email marketing strategy will help you:

  • Create brand awareness

  • Drive traffic to your website, landing pages and/or shop

  • Nurture your leads by creating trust

  • And obviously, generate revenue

 

Take Action

Quantify a few metrics as goals to help you later on assess what’s working and what needs tweaks:

  • For online entrepreneurs in general, quizzes and contests.

Adding a quiz or a contest on your website and your social media channels is a great way to engage with potential customers and get email sign-ups. Quizzes are especially effective for email list building since they help you build email lists with users interested in your services or products and can help you segment them based on their answers.

Contests are also great email list-building strategies since they offer an incentive for people to sign up, such as a chance to win a prize or get a discount code.

Pinterest is a fantastic platform for email list building.

It’s estimated that up to 70% of pins on Pinterest are primarily about generating leads, growing email lists and creating email opt-ins.

My own experience: Pinterest is my number 1 email marketing strategy because it’s a platform that quickly drives traffic outside the platform. It brings more than 80% of my email list growth, which is hugely significant compared to the traffic I gain from social media, with 4 times more followers.

There are many powerful reasons why Pinterest is so powerful in building your email marketing strategy and accelerating your email list building.

You can:

  • Easily link directly to your email marketing sign-up forms with static and video pins on Pinterest.

  • Create a valuable form of valuable evergreen content to attract your ideal audience to your email marketing strategy with idea pins, which will include a link from 2023.

  • Experiment with different lead magnets to see what works best as you can post different pins for different lead magnets.

  • Drive traffic to long-form content outside Pinterest, like your blog or your YouTube channel, where you can can signup forms to further enhance your email marketing strategies.

  • Attract your target audience with different content pillars on Pinterest using different boards.

You don’t need:

  • Thousands and thousands of followers like on social media or years of domain authority building like in Google to rank on Pinterest.

You can also use other forms of content to attract your ideal client with your email marketing strategy.

For example, I created the blog on my website to serve you with valuable and free content, and at the same time, it brings people to my email list sign-up forms on my blog directly from Google searches (and indirectly from Pinterest).

I love investing in learning Google SEO and creating long-form content for my blog as a way to deliver in-depth value (in contrast to the short-form content elsewhere.

You can create content on YouTube or social media and create a Call to Action (CTA) to your email list sign-up forms.

My personal experience (which is in line with many other online entrepreneurs) is that social media isn’t great for generating traffic to go outside their platform.

Pinterest is a magic traffic generator to your email list sign-up forms. That’s, in reality, the magic of Pinterest when compared to Instagram, Tiktok, Twitter or Facebook.

Whenever thinking about creating your email marketing strategy and how to drive traffic to your email sign-up forms, always consider the power of the platform where you create the content to facilitate traffic outside the platform easily. When thinking about the stages of email marketing strategy, the one related to building your email list and securing sign-ups is essential.

I see many needing help with their email growth, posting and posting on Instagram and not getting very far.

What do I mean?

Well, let me tell you, I can’t even recall how many times I have heard a pear online entrepreneur share the same fact in a membership or group programme: “I have an email list, but I really don’t do much with it. I’m unsure what to write; a newsletter is too much work every week.”

Yeap, have no shame if you are in the same boat. You aren’t alone!

So let’s look at what it means to have the best email marketing strategies to nurture and sell, and importantly how to do it simply.

So, first of all, let’s make this point loud and clear.

There is no point in creating your email marketing strategy and building your email list to do nearly nothing with it.

Your subscribers will completely forget about you and why they gave you their email in the first instance if the only moment you send an email is when you want to sell something.

In sales, whether online or offline, I’ve seen it very clearly through my years in business, you need to build up trust with your prospects.

Here is an analogy for you.

Imagine you always wanted to buy a classic Ferrari when achieving a particular milestone.

When that moment arrives, you go to a Ferrari garage to buy it.

Interestingly at that point, and despite all the strong desire to buy, all the doubts and fears start popping up:

  • “Would it be reliable?”
  • “Would you be able to drive it with ease?”
  • “Is it going to be a source of huge expenses?”
  • “How are you going to feel?”
  • “Should you go for something different, another brand?”
  • “What’s the right combination of model, engine, mileage and colour to maintain and increase value in the future?”
  • “Should you invest in something completely different, not a classic Ferrari?”
  • That’s where all the previous marketing and inspiring content you have consumed BEFORE stepping into the sales room kicks in!

    You are there because that’s precisely what you want and need.

    The rest, the salesman, will answer.

    But without all the build-up of desire and trust for the brand beforehand, you would not have chosen to go to a Ferrari garage.

    That’s one of the magic of the Ferrari brand. The dream starts as a kid.

And, by the way, this is the exact story of what we experienced as a family when buying our first classic Ferrari!

Your email list is exactly the same. You’re creating that brand story, desire, personal connection, and value that makes taking the next step, buying from you, a no-brainer.

 

How to keep your email marketing strategy simple to be consistent

Here comes something that will shock you...

Bin the idea of a newsletter!

Many start believing that sending an email to their email list creates a weekly online magazine by email. It becomes such a vast endeavour every week that it becomes unsustainable.

So approach your emails in your email list strategy without a rigid format, especially not a long one constantly. That will help you remove the overwhelm of “what-to-send-this-week?!”.

 

Take Action

When creating your emails for your email list strategy, mix it up.

To mix it up, alternate your email content through the weeks with different approaches:

  • educational content
  • inspirational content
  • storytelling
  • personal experience results (wins and flops)
  • credibility building with social proof
  • action-driven for quick wins

Once you grow your list, this is one of the biggest battles in email marketing strategy.

You can write brrrrrrilliant emails to your email list, but they could be going to a black hole if your email list subscribers don’t open your emails.

Let’s be honest.

How many emails do we get bombarded with every day?

Sooooooo many. Too many. The large majority becomes noise. Fact! Noise to the point you can’t be bothered to click to open them.

That’s what open rates measure: the percentage of people who open your emails of the total number of people who receive them.

The best email marketing strategy for high open rates is to get better at your email titles.

47% of email recipients only open the mail based on the subject line.

 

Take Action

Work on improving your subject lines and the hook.

  • Keep them short (6-7 words is optimum)
  • Test different titles: A/B testing is a way to send the same email with different titles to see what works best and learn what resonates more.
  • Create urgency: If a subject line has a sense of urgency, it also increases the open rate by 22%.
  • Avoid spammy words like “free, lifetime, now only, miracle, urgent, earn $, cheap, click here, act now, never, great offer, 100% satisfied, get started now, order now...”
  • Personalize your subject lines: This technique involves adding your subscriber's name to the email title. Subject lines that are personalized are 22% more likely to be opened.
  • Check for mobile: Send a test email and check how it appears on mobile. If your subject line is truncated on mobile and misses an essential part, you’ll suffer with lower open rates.

 

Successful email marketing strategies for better results

Here are a series of best practices to increase the impact and results from your email. There are pro tips that I have used and tested myself and will undoubtedly boost how your email list subscribers will respond to your emails.

 

Pro tip:

  • Write to just one person: use “you” (the more, the better) and avoid all costs of talking to a group (for instance: “you guys”)
  • Enable scan reading: Everyone struggles with time and, importantly, the time dedicated to email inbox management.
    • Help your readers by helping them get the key messages of your emails with short paragraphs, bold text and headings.
  • Be personal in your email signature: Create a highly personal signature that makes you unique and distinct.
    • It can be done only with text (no fancy graphics are needed).
    • Just ensure that your brand voice comes out.
  • Easy to read on mobile: when you prepare your email marketing content on a desktop or laptop, you’re working on a larger screen and might completely miss out on how it will appear on mobile.
    • A short paragraph on a desktop can appear very long on mobile.
    • So continuously optimize your email marketing strategy for mobile.

The email content is one part of the marketing process, but what about getting people to click on your email offers?

This depends heavily on how you craft your email calls to action (CTAs).

Your goal should be to invite readers to take just two actions: either click a link or reply back.

 

Take Action

  • When writing CTAs, keep them short, specific, and action-oriented. For example: “Get your free ebook now!” or “Take the first step here.”
  • Also, try to use persuasive copywriting techniques, such as making readers feel they’re missing out on something great if they don’t click.
  • Finally, don’t forget to make your email CTAs look more attractive by using visuals. Images and buttons can be great tools to boost email clicks.

By consistently following the email marketing strategies outlined above, you will see a significant increase in email list building, open rates, engagement levels, and CTRs from your email campaigns. Take some time to experiment with different approaches and track your results.

Another great way to drive clicks from your emails is to include a video GIF that links to a short video. It’s pretty irresistible to receive a video preview and not click to watch it. This technique is only used by a few, and it will make you stand out.

Alternatively, create the irresistible urge to click on a link and watch a video by sending a short email and a link to watch it.

Lastly, don’t forget that driving clicks gets your email subscribers to interact with you and your content. Clicks aren’t always associated with sales or promotions.

You can drive clicks through your email marketing strategy content with the following:

  • Links to long-form content like a blog or a YouTube video

  • An instant downloadable

  • Access to a new freebie (instead of expecting your email list subscribers to sign up for it, give it to them with a one-click)

  • Invites to free events

  • A dedicated short-form video

  • Exclusive access to content that only your email list subscribers can get

Any of the above will drive clicks but, importantly, build engagement and trust by delivering value without constantly selling.

Now that you know how to use email marketing strategies to drive clicks, let’s see how you can make sales through email.

The key here is to understand the needs of your email list subscribers and provide them with the right solution for their problems. That’s why storytelling techniques can be widely used in email campaigns.

By creating a story about your email list subscribers, you can create an emotional connection and tell them that you understand their needs. In other words, it helps to build trust with email subscribers.

Another email marketing strategy for sales is to focus on urgency. It would help if you made your email list subscribers act now before they miss out on something great. This could be a special discount, a limited-time offer or a sale.

Finally, email list segmentation is also one of the email marketing strategies to increase sales. By segmenting your email list into different categories (e.g., gender, location, past purchases), you can tailor your email campaigns to specific needs and interests.

 

For example

If you know that email list subscribers in one segment are more likely to purchase a particular product, you can target them with email campaigns tailored to their needs.

And, above all, don’t be shy!

However, if your emails don’t sound like you, your voice isn’t authentic, and you will struggle to establish the connection you want with your email marketing strategy.

When it comes to email marketing, setting measurable goals and objectives is critical. You need to define what you want to achieve with your email campaigns to know if they are successful.

Your email marketing goals should be SMART – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely.

For example, if you want to increase email list sign-ups, your goal might be “to increase email list sign-ups by 10% in 4 weeks”.

Usually, when you create an email marketing sign-up form, you create 1 page for it and use the same address across all the platforms where you’ve a presence.

To level up your email marketing strategy results, you want to understand what source brings you more traffic and email subscriber sign-ups. The easiest way to do this is to duplicate your sign-up form and give it a different link to then analyse which link brings the most signups.

 

For example:

For my FREE Pinterest workshop, I could create a single sign-up page:

Alternatively, I can create multiple links depending where I include them:

This second approach gives me a greater understanding of my key source of signups, enabling me to double down on it.

It’s entirely up to you to create as many variations of the email marketing sign-up page as you want.

Secondly, when someone signs up, you can tag them using your automation tools (Kartra offers this) so that you can analyze the source of your leads.

You can also look at the volume of traffic to each sign-up page with Google analytics. I prefer the tagging method, as it enables you to track conversions (actual sign-ups), not just traffic.

The beauty of tagging is that it builds a depth of understanding per lead. You could also create different thank-you pages for different sources, resulting in your ability to see similar analytics with tagging.
