The time wasters on how to get followers on Pinterest

Frankly, I can’t believe the amount of old or just simply wrong advice out there about how to get followers on Pinterest. I sometimes simply think that too many are copying each other content and not doing the real thing! All you get here is based on my experience of pinning and what works or doesn’t. Ready to get your notifications looking like mine? Have a look!

So before I get into what really works, let’s erase stuff that will waste your time big time!

1. Time waster #1: Joining relevant group boards

One of the big reasons why some created group boards was to get more followers on Pinterest fast. As part of their conditions to allow you to join the group, they ask for a follow.

Some large accounts on Pinterest just grew super fast like this back in time.

So why don't I recommend this in this blog about how to get followers on Pinterest? Simple.

Group boards can be the worst spammy thing you can have on your Pinterest for business account and significantly affect the quality of your account and, therefore, your Pinterest SEO.

Group boards are no longer the way to go to grow on Pinterest. They’re an old expired strategy that you’d better ditch.

2. Time waster #2: Following other users

You, my friend, may think this works. Yeah, I admit it, I did this on Instagram a looooooooog time ago.

But now, should you follow for a follow? Oh no! This is the fastest way into a suspended account.

Plus, importantly, all those followers won’t genuinely follow you because they want to engage in your content on Pinterest.

That only means one thing. Bad-quality followers that will plummet your Pinterest analytics and Pinterest SEO.

In short, this is definitely not the way how to get followers on Pinterest. Still, be mindful that there are plenty of blogs out there that advise that you follow social media strategies on Pinterest.

Well, here is the thing: Pinterest isn’t social media. Spare your time and don’t use exported strategies from social media that don’t work.

3. Time waster #3: Following your competitor’s followers

Seriously? I can’t believe how many times I have seen this on blogs about how to get followers on Pinterest! Yes, yes, even those top-ranking.

This is just another, more targeted way to try a follow-for-follow strategy on Pinterest.

It’s a poor way of transposing social media strategies that have been used for a long time (spoiler alert, they’re a real waste of time on social media too these days!) to Pinterest by people who don’t understand Pinterest or how to get followers on Pinterest.

Why would you go on a spree of following your target audience? As you do so, you’re signalling to Pinterest all sort of diverse interests based on the accounts you’re randomly following. Pinterest algorithm will get confused about what you’re about. Plus get ready to see your Pinterest feed full of things you don’t want to see.

What makes sense is to follow some competitors accounts on your niche.

4. Time waster #4: Engaging with others on Pinterest

Here comes another copy and paste from social media strategies: engage with other accounts every day so that you get noticed.

Well, this isn’t the way to go either. As Pinterest isn’t a social media platform, people aren’t on the platform for account-to-account engagement. In fact, DM’s are rare, comments too.

There is nothing wrong about genuinely leaving a comment or engaging with an account, but it isn’t the strategy to get more followers on Pinterest.

When you want to understand how to get followers on Pinterest, replicating social media old (or even current) strategies isn’t going to land you the results you expect.

Results start but understanding Pinterest users' intent. What they want to achieve when they’re on Pinterest. More about this later.

So don’t waste your time sending messages with your pins to an account. I get this constantly, see an example from my account below, and they are more annoying than anything else.

The one thing that will be beneficial for your Pinterest for business presence and eventually to get more followers on Pinterest is to have the right content on your account.

So saving from time to time top-ranking pins for the latest trends, or seasonal content, or very popular accounts will help signal to Pinterest what your account is about.

But, remember, if you fill your account with pins from other accounts, instead of your own, you’re diluting your impact. So use this carefully and sparingly.

You, my friend, want to shine by yourself because you have a superpower that your audience will love.

5. Time waster #5: Buying followers

What? Buying followers? Seriously, even if you can, don’t even spend a dime on that.

6. Time waster #6: Using an older account

Are you wondering why some suggest to use an older Pinterest account to get followers on Pinterest? Here comes the logic of this far-stretch advice that you can ditch: the suggestion that Pinterest will trust your account more if it’s older. Are you going to rank more with an older account?

Here is the fact.

Just observe the type of accounts that rank on Pinterest. Many aren’t large accounts. In fact, very regularly, top-ranking pins have very few followers and are recent accounts. Look at some of my research on Pinterest to demonstrate this point below.

That’s one of the HUGE differentiator of Pinterest vs Google. You don’t need a huge domain authority built through years of backlinks strategy to rank on Pinterest. Yeah!

So put simply, you don't need an older Pinterest account to get followers on Pinterest faster.

7. Time waster #7: Re-pinning older content again and again

There is a normal temptation with pins, especially because this used to work back in time, to save time and keep on repinning exactly the same pins again and again.

Well, these days, this strategy doesn’t work any more. Moreover, you run the very real risk of getting suspended by being too spammy.

Now that you know your time wasters on how to get followers on Pinterest, let’s get to what works. Let’s do this!

Step 1 - How to get followers on Pinterest: Audience clarity

You might think that this blog is the usual list of hacks you’ve seen a million times. You, my friend, are going to be surprised! I’ll go deeper than you think (pulling from all my Pinterest experimenting) and include the things that others skip over and make all the difference!

Plus, don’t leave this blog without watching my FREE Pinterest training for you. Watch instantly here:

8. Unlocking success: Pinterest for business

Let’s start with a simple basis, still totally necessary: having a Pinterest for business account. It’s totally free, and you’ll be able to pin your own content and access a ton of free resources!

Take action

  • Upgrade your account to a Pinterest for business account.

9. Foundations of follower growth: Building a solid Pinterest foundation

Here is some advice that’s the basis for it all. I see it too many times. People assume they know and skip this vital step to get followers on Pinterest.

Only when you fully understand your ideal leads can you create pins that will resonate with them.

So before you go any further, answer these Qs:

  • What are your target audience goals?

  • What do they dream of? What drives them and motivates them every day?

  • What is stopping them from achieving their goals? What are their struggles?

  • What have they tried doing before and didn’t work? What are their missteps?

  • What is holding them back? What are their objections to what you offer?

It’s very likely that you did this exercise when you started your online business or got your website done a while back. It’s great to review it regularly. What’s top of your audience's mind changes over time, and those nuances can make all the difference.

Take action

  • Take a couple of hours this week to refresh your market research and answer the questions above.

The deeper you understand them, the more Pinterest followers you’ll see.

10. Targeting your people: Focus on a specific Pinterest audience

Here is a simple and powerful Q: who are you talking to on Pinterest? Clarity about your target audience and how not to try to talk to everyone impacts your results, especially when you care about how to get followers on Pinterest.

For example, you can pin for:

  • parents

  • parents with young children

  • parents with babies

  • struggles and tips for parents with newborn babies

If you’re a parent with a newborn baby who cries a lot, imagine that you won't be much interested in the strategies to get into college, how to prepare your teenager to sit exams, how to motivate your 10-year old do homework or how to handle bad behaviour.

All of that is noise to you. Would you follow that account?

Instead, you find a Pinterest account dedicated to babies and the challenges parents face in the first initial months.

Among other pins, you find pins about a frequent struggle and how to solve it: “Why does my baby cry?”

That's a definite follow. See below a great example I’ve pulled for you from Pinterest of this.

11. Understanding Pinterest intent: Decode your audience's motivations

This is potentially one of the most forgotten and essential elements of great Pinterest marketing.

Without a deep understanding of why your people are hanging around in a platform, you’re constantly guessing what to show them.

for example:

  • Let’s take an analogy. Why do some choose to go to a camping site?
    • They want the independence of holidaying freely, not having to pay for far more expensive hotels or house rentals.
    • They prefer to be close to nature.
    • They want the amenities that the camping site offer.
  • Let's imagine that you show up in a camping sit trying to talk about cruise holidays or selling top-of-the-range kitchen units.
  • Yeah, maybe you find someone interested, but they aren’t camping for this.
  • Now imagine someone coming to offer a 2-day trekking experience on the local mountain trails.
  • Which one will get more attention?

I’m making this analogy purposely extreme.

If you’re thinking, “What does this have to do with Pinterest?”

A lot. Understand your audience's intent on Pinterest, and your Pinterest followers will start pouring in.

People are on Pinterest to find inspiration, plan things for their lives, and take action. They aren’t here to hear about your personal life.

Pro Tip

  • Your content on Pinterest is about sparkling actionable inspiration for your audience.
  • Don’t treat it as social media to share what you’ve done today (unless it is relevant to your audience to inspire them).

Through my blogs, I suggest to you other my blogs and free workshops. Some are from my top-pick of online educators who have transformed my online journey and I know you can achieve the same.

12. Decoding success: Understand top-ranking pins

Now you’re getting into the groove, my friend. You’ve already ditched the time wasters on how to get followers on Pinterest and you have your basics.

Time to understand deeper what performs on Pinterest.

Take action

  • Spend 1 hour searching your niche on Pinterest and notice what pops up at the top of your searches.
  • Search your competitors and what they pin.

Those top-ranking pins show you very well what your audience cares about.

Make a note of the topics and types of titles. For example, are they about:

  • making things easy

  • how to’s

  • saving time

  • making money

  • list of special destinations

  • specific advice for certain specific audiences (e.g. women in their 50’s, curvy shapes, curly hair, new coaches, side hustlers…)

Notice the patterns. You’ll learn the heartbeat of your audience.

This will translate into what content you create (and gaps of what’s missing), and your pins will rock!

When thinking about how to get followers on Pinterest, understanding what ranks is a great activity.

13. Use Pinterest Trends to understand your audience better

Excellent, my friend! Can you notice how much you understand already about your audience, specifically on Pinterest? This is getting you into a great place for how to get followers on Pinterest. Let’s keep going.

Are you ready for the next step? I know you are!

Take action

  • Go to your Pinterest account, under Analytics, and spend time on the Treends section.
  • Explore seasonal trends, annual trends, and growing trends for your niche.
  • Create pins using keywords that are top-ranking on the Pinterest trends tool.

I know that after you start playing with the Pinterest Trends tool, you’ll have so many aha moments! There is gold here totally for free. Happy exploring.

All this will get you ranking, and your ideal leads will looooove it. That’s how to get followers on Pinterest!

Here is a screenshot of the Pinterest Trends from my Pinterest account for you:

14. Hop on the holidays/seasons to get followers on Pinterest faster

With your Pinterest trends research comes a powerful insight… what things people search more at certain times of the year: your seasonal interest peaks.

Take action

  • Create pins for the different seasonal interests your niche has.
  • For example: Back to school, back to the office, Halloween, Holidays, Summer time, Spring break, Valentine's Day, New Year’s resolutions…

When you show your audience what they need or are looking for when they need it, oh my friend, magic happens. Followers on Pinterest are a natural result!

When you ask yourself now how to grow followers on Pinterest, you’re getting tons of clarity already: pin what your audience searches for, at the time of the year that matters!

Step 2 - How to get followers on Pinterest: Brand uniqueness

Let’s be realistic. Now that you’re getting the hang of it and master the essentials soooooo many totally forget, let’s go through the other strategies on how to get followers on Pinterest at pace. Ready?

15. A Pinterest profile that stands out for more followers on Pinterest

Before someone decides to follow, it’s very likely they’ll check out your Pinterest profile to see if they’re likely to want to see more from you.

What do they find at that point?

Take action

  • Update your Pinterest profile, your About section, Pinterest name and your Pinterest cover to clearly show at a glance what you do and for whom.
  • Needs to be relevant, helpful, and 100% for your audience.
  • Plus, don’t forget to use keywords (more about this in the next point).

Have a look at how I achieve that on my Pinterest account:

Your Pinterest account isn’t just to get followers on Pinterest, it is also to get more reach on Pinterest. What do I mean?

Optimising your Pinterest account isn’t just about having a beautiful cover but also about including keywords.

More about this later on this blog. Let’s keep going.

17. Uniqueness wins for followers on Pinterest

Importantly, create some templates based on your brand visual identity so that, over time your pins are a strong visual identity for your account.

Pinterest followers might not happen right the first time they see one of your pins… but as they start seeing more and recognising you through your cohesive pin designs, yeah, the Pinterest follow happens!

Here is a series of my own pins and you’ll see how you can visually tell immediately the consistency of the branding elements.

20. Strategic pinning: Crafting outcome-driven Pinterest pins

Frankly, there is nothing that will make stand out more and get more followers on Pinterest than consistently creating pins that are outcome-driven.

What do I mean?

Instead of talking about the what, refer to the result.

Here is how I have changed my pins to make them more outcome-driven. Can you see the difference in my own examples below.

Take action

  • Change your perspective on your pins: Make them less about you, a thing, a process… and more about them and the outcome they want to reach.

Step 3 - How to get followers on Pinterest: Optimise to rank

If you don’t show up on searches or the Pinterest feed, you’ll struggle to get followers on Pinterest.

So this section is all about sharing with you my experience with what’s called Pinterest SEO, which stands for Pinterest Search Engine Optimisation. It sounds like a fancy name. In simple terms, it’s all about ensuring that Pinterest understands your account, your pins, and that you offer a quality account that people engage with and isn’t spammy.

Let’s see how it’s done so that you discover an essential strategy on how to get followers on Pinterest. By the way, you’ve already learned about some of this earlier in this blog. Yeesss! Let’s keep on adding to it.

21. Optimize your Pinterest username

Remember you’ve optimised your Pinterest cover and About section already. Here is what else you can do to get your Pinterest profile in a tip-top fitness to rank to get followers on Pinterest.

Take action

  • Optimize your username with keywords.
  • Note: Sometimes, you might don’t want to do that. That’s ok. Still, inject keywords on your Pinterest name and about section.

Do you want to kickstart your Pinterest account? I’ve got exactly what you need, my friend. Time to grab my FREE Pinterest guide:

22. Claim your website on Pinterest

When Pinterest has confirmation that your pinning is original content, it will show more your pins. How do you achieve that?

It’s as simple as claiming your website with Pinterest.

How? You inject a piece of code that Pinterest gives you in your website. Here are Pinterest instructions.

Take action

  • Claim your website.

Once you have verified your account, you’ll see in on your Pinterest account. Have a look at my Pinterest account as an example:

And, if you haven’t got a website, that’s ok. However, you, my friend, are an online entrepreneur. Nothing is like having your own place on the net, out of any algorithm nonsense.

Pro Tip

  • Don’t just rely on social media platforms or content platforms. Yeap, I said it.
  • Create a simple website where you’re in control and show your genius.

23. Optimise your Pinterest boards for followers on Pinterest

Optimising Pinterest to show up on searches doesn’t stop with your profile. Use keywords in your board names and pin descriptions.

This is easily forgotten, and it can make or break your performance.

Plus, remember that you can get followers on Pinterest not only to your account but specifically to your Pinterest boards.

Take action

  • Optimize your boards names and descriptions for keywords

24. Name Pinterest boards thoughtfully

As well as having Pinterest keywords in your Pinterest board names, make sure that your boards are named simply. Many try to apply creativity to their board names and that confuses both your Pinterest users and Pinterest algorithm.

On the path to learning how to get followers on Pinterest, you must embrace simplicity in your Pinterest board names, always revolving around keywords.

25. Include detailed descriptions

Pinterest pin descriptions are an important way to signal to Pinterest what your pin is about and where to show it.

Your pin description can have 500 characters. Use as much as possible. Not only include keywords but also write compelling copy to help users be intrigued to know more and click.

This is an important step into getting more followers on Pinterest.

Check an example of one of my great performing pins to see how I build the desire to click through the Pinterest pin description.

26. Pinterest hashtags (or no Pinterest hashtags?)

There has always been this question about hashtags on Pinterest pin descriptions.

Should you include hashtags on your pin descriptions or not? How many hashtags should you include in your Pinterest pin descriptions?

Pinterest has answered this one to me and here is what i can tell you.

Hashtags aren’t going to make a huge difference to you Pinterest monthly viewers yet Pinterest uses them as part of the overall pin information to help you rank.

And you know it by now, knowing how to get followers on Pinterest starts with knowing how to get your pins ranking on Pinterest.

Take action

  • Use 2-3 hashtags in your pin descriptions.

To discover all you ned too know about this, check out my blog: Pinterest Hashtags And Pinterest Keywords In 2024 | Your Questions Answered.

27. Boosting video reach with relevant topic tags

Let’s continue to see what else helps you rank on Pinterest for more monthly viewers and Pinterest followers.

This one is easily forgotten on video pins!

Take action

  • When you create video pins, include tags to your pin.

In the screenshot below of one of my pins from my account you see where you add your tags to a video pin:

28. Elevate your presence with unique Pinterest content

When thinking how to get followers on Pinterest, there is something that is central to it all. Think about the user experience. If you keep on bombarding your account with always the same pins again and again, that’s spammy and people will not want to follow you.

Nothing like great marketing best practices!

Take action

  • Experiment with your pin designs and create various designs to keep your feed fresh.

29. Pin it to a relevant board first

Now you have some of the basics to get more follower on Pinterest, let’s keep on unveiling for you pro-tips to get your pins showing up on search on Pinterest. Because, remember, ranking on Pinterest is a necessary step to get followers on Pinterest, simple!

Pro Tip

  • The first time you pin a new pin, save it to the most relevant Pinterest board.

30. Consider making some boards secret

This is one of my favourite ways to optimise your Pinterest account to have a very clear Pinterest SEO. Over time you can easily end up with many Pinterest boards, not all of them you pin to, and some are just for personal interests.

Take action

  • Make secret any personal Pinterest boards that don't relate to your online business.

Here is a screenshot from my Pinterest account on how to make a Pinterest board secret. So simple!

31. Delete poor-performing pins (but be careful!)

Why would you delete pins? Poor-performing pins can reduce the overall performance of your account. So a school of thought is to delete underperforming pins.

So how do you find out what pins need to be deleted? Ah, my friend, this is something that takes a full blog to answer, so check out my blog about how to delete pins on Pinterest to boost your SEO and not get suspended here:

32. Navigating Pinterest with adherence and success

Pinterest is very open about what types on pins they give preference to when it comes to ranking on Pinterest. Those are pins that follow Pinterest format guidelines, because they know they are the ones that Pinterest users love.

Want to know more about that, checkout Pinterest Community Guidelines and Pinterest Terms Of Service here.

Step 4 - How to get followers on Pinterest: Drive clickability

Yessssss! The section of this blog you’ve just finished has made you understand what many flop when they use Pinterest.

You, my friend, are rocking it!

Now that your pins will pop on Pinterest searches, let’s get you to secure the important click. That means understanding how to stop the scroll.

Clickability on your pins is an essential step in how to get followers on Pinterest.

33. What to post on Pinterest to get followers

The foundation of stopping the scroll goes back to user intent.

Why are people on Pinterest? They are on Pinterest in search of inspiration they can make happen.

So drive clicks with pins that offer actionable inspiration and you’ll get more followers on Pinterest than you could imagine.

Craft Pinterest pins that motivate and drive action.

Here is an example of my pin that achieves exactly that:

34. Radiate positivity: Building a sunny presence on Pinterest

The other most important characteristic that Pinterest users love about Pinterest is that they consider it the most positive platform online. An online oasys.

So get your pins to inspire with tons of positivity. Scaremongering isn’t a winner on Pinterest.

35. Captivating pins with text magic

Hey friend, have you ever felt like your Pinterest pins are getting lost in the endless scroll? That’s exactly what yo don’t want for your own pins.

Adding a dash of text overlay to your pins graphics is like giving them a megaphone.

Think about it – when someone's mindlessly scrolling, a catchy caption can make them pause, ponder, and ultimately hit that follow button.

So, my friend, let your words do the talking and watch your pins stand out to get followers on Pinterest.

You don’t really need an example here… you’ve already seen many all along this blog.

36. Size matters – Image edition

When it comes to snagging those Pinterest followers, size really does matter – your pin size, that is!

Ensure your pins have the right dimensions because a well-sized pin not only looks better but also grabs attention like a Pinterest superstar.

So, remember this golden rule in your quest on how to get more followers on Pinterest: the right pin size is your secret weapon to building lots of Pinterest followers. Vertical pins always perform better (1000x1000px).

37. Lights, camera, followers – Embrace video pins

Let’s take your Pinterest game to the next level! It's time to ditch only pinning graphics and embrace the dynamic with video pins.

In the world of "how to get lots of Pinterest followers," video is your secret weapon.

38. Rich pins – Your ticket to Pinterest relevance

In the quest for more Pinterest followers, here's a game-changer: Rich pins. These little wonders not only make your pins look sleek but also sync them with your website.

Why does that matter, you ask? Well, my friend, it's all about staying relevant.

I show exactly how to set up rich pins in my online course, The Profitable Pinterest Secrets.

39. Pin Perfection – A/B testing magic

Ever wondered what makes a pin go from good to Pinterest stardom?

Enter A/B testing – your secret weapon in the "how to get more followers on Pinterest" playbook. It's like having a backstage pass to your pin's performance.

What is A/B testing? Create 2 versions for your pin. Try different visuals, captions, or formats, and let the numbers do the talking. But only change 1 thing at a time!

Pin by pin, you'll uncover the magic formula that resonates best with your audience, and soon enough, those followers will be hitting that follow button like never before.

So, my friend, don't just pin and pray – test, tweak, and triumph!

Step 5 - How to get followers on Pinterest: Create bingeable pins

40. Visual wisdom – Infographics and highly savable pins for the win

If you want to inject a dose of vitamins to your Pinterest account, think about creating highly savable pins. Those pins are those that deliveer huge value and Pinterest users want to come back to again and again.

Picture this: a scroll-stopping infographic that not only educates but also invites a flurry of saves and follows.

Infographics are like superheroes of Pinterest for saves – they provide valuable information in a visually enticing package.

When your audience finds your infographic not only shareable but also a must-save, you've hit the jackpot. So, my friend, unleash your visual wisdom, craft those infographics, and watch the saves and Pinterest followers roll in.

Here is an infographic I created for one of my blogs that gets saves and saves!

41. Pinning persistence – The power of consistency

In the realm of "how to get lots of Pinterest followers," consistency is your trusty friend.

No need for daily Pinterest marathons; you can schedule your pins and stay active effortlessly.

When you consistently save pin in the platform, it's like a friendly tap on your followers' shoulders, saying, "Hey, I'm still here, sharing cool stuff!".

So, my friend, make consistency your Pinterest mantra, schedule those pins, and let the platform do the work in building your Pinterest followers steadily over time.
